Sheetward User Guide

Turn an Excel workbook (or Google Sheet) into a multi-user web app — forms, validation, lookups, import/export and more.

What is Sheetward?Start here

Sheetward generates a fully functional web application from an Excel workbook (or Google Sheet). You design your data and rules in familiar spreadsheet tabs; Sheetward reads them and builds data-entry forms, validation, dropdown lookups, calculated fields, and a records grid with import/export.

Each generated app keeps its data in its own isolated dataset, so apps stay separate and any one of them can be published as a standalone, self-contained deployment.

Instead of learning a design canvas and arranging widgets, you define your app in an Excel workbook or Google Sheet. Your workbook is the App Specification — a structured definition of the forms, fields, business rules, validations, calculations, security and workflows you want. This gives you fine-grained control, and makes it easy to prototype, review and improve your app through rapid iterations.

Sheetward brings enterprise-ready capabilities to apps you design in a spreadsheet:

  • Role-based access control — workspace and per-app roles decide who can see and change what.
  • Field-level permissions, masking and encryption — sensitive fields are masked on screen and in exports, and encrypted before they reach the database.
  • Business rules and field validations — required fields, formats, ranges and conditional logic, enforced on every save.
  • Change history and audit logs — every record carries who changed it and when, and workspace actions land in an audit log.
  • Backup and restore — scheduled backups, a recycle bin and non-destructive restore keep your data safe.
  • Reports and dashboards — KPI tiles, an interactive pivot and charts, with no separate BI tool.
  • Multilingual applications — your apps run in English, German, Japanese or Arabic, with regional formats for each viewer.

AI assistance, when you need it. You can also create or change an app with plain-language prompts: describe what you need and Sheetward drafts an App Specification for you to review and refine. AI speeds up the design without taking away control — the app is built deterministically from the specification you approve, so Sheetward implements what you define rather than guessing how your app should work.

Built for every stage of growth. From individual creators and entrepreneurs to small businesses and large enterprises, Sheetward takes you from idea to a working app faster — with greater clarity and control.

The workbook is a blueprint, not your data. Sheetward reads your workbook to build the application — its forms, field names, data types, lookups and rules. The cell values are only used as samples to infer each field's data type; they are not loaded as records, so a new app starts empty. Use Import after the app is created to load data.
